Gypsy of Iran

Prayer Requests

Pray that God would raise up workers among this isolated people group, and that they would be accepted by the Domari as they seek to meet the needs of this deprived people. Pray that physical needs would create an opportunity to reach this people group. Pray that they will learn that Jesus offers hope to the hopeless and treasure in heaven.

The Gypsies of Iran

16 Jan 2007

The Domari, over 1.3 million of which live in Iran, are an Arabic-speaking minority group, making their language unintelligible to European gypsies or Romani. In Tehran, they are called "stranger" and in the northern provinces of Iran "Juki." The Domari tend to hold traditional gypsy occupations, such as blacksmiths, carpenters, barbers, butchers and musicians. Many are denied education and healthcare in Iran due to not having a permanent residence.

Although most Domari are Sunni Muslim, many Domari have held on to traditional beliefs. These traditional beliefs range from ghosts that can harm humans, to people who are gifted to heal the sick, to the power of the "evil eye." Polygamy is also practiced among this group.

Due to the fact that they are Arabic speakers, the Domari have the Jesus Film and the Bible in their language. There is also a small group of known gypsy believers in the Middle East.
