Game time!

Kids all over the world love to find creative ways to have fun and entertain themselves, Central Asia is no different! While some of the kids in bigger cities may play video games or sports like you do here in America, most Central Asian kids have games of their own. Many of the games; like Rezinka, involve a lot of jumping, coordination, and exercise. Let's learn how to play the games that kids in Central Asia play!

Rezinka: Make a big circle (4-6 ft circumference) of thin elastic. Or, cut up some hose and tie together until you get a similar circle. This is your rezinka. While the jumping games vary from people group to people group, one of the most simple is the following: Two people stand with the rezinka stretched between them around their ankles. The rest must jump into the oval and back out again without touching the rezinka. If you touch the rezinka, you have to trade places with someone holding it! The game continues as the holders raise the rezinka to the knee, waists, hip, armpits, and, for the really good ones, neck.

CA Dodgeball: Divide into two groups, then argue over who gets to be “in the middle” first. Only one ball needed. The outside group possesses the ball, split in half and facing each other about 15 feet apart. The inside group must stand in the middle (three people “in” at a time) and dodge the ball which the outside group passes from side to side. If the ball hits someone before touching the ground, that person is out. If the ball is caught by someone in the middle, they receive an extra “life,” which they can either use to redeem someone already out or redeem themselves if hit. Once all but one of the middle group are hit, the remaining individual gets as many tries as they are old to evade the ball. If the throwers can get the person out by the end of those tries, the outside team gets to go in the middle. If the last insider survives their number of tries, they redeem their whole team and get to start over. Good with a big group.

Let's color!

Art is an important part of life in all cultures, but especially in Central Asia. Artists there make beautiful tapestries, rugs, mosaics and paintings. Practice your own art skills by coloring pictures of Central Asia.
