Pray for the Avar
Out of 650,000 Muslim people in the Avar people group cluster there are approximately 25 believers who follow Jesus as Messiah. However, many Avar are open to spiritual discussions, especially if you have a trust relationship. The difficulty will be in gaining access to them.
The Republic of Dagestan in southern Russia, where the Avar people live, was world famous for its Muslim training centers until the Russians occupied the area in the mid-1800's. Islam is enjoying a resurgence due to poor living conditions, rising minority nationalism, and corruption. Still this is a unique time of openness to share Jesus. The biggest barrier is that they see Christianity as being ethnically Russian. Since the Russians were their conquerors, they resist this.
Dagestan is politically unstable and there are ocassional bombings, kidnappings, and crime-driven violence. Pray for peace in Dagestan! Pray for God to raise up contextualized house churches among the Avar to increase His Kingdom of Peace!
